Formula Feeding

Formula Feeding

Before choosing formula feeding, remember that breast milk is the best source of nutrition for your baby, and no formula can fully replace its unique benefits. However, if breastfeeding is not possible despite every effort, choose a commercially manufactured infant formula, as it is designed to resemble breast milk more closely than homemade alternatives.

Commercial infant formula is generally classified into two types:

  • Standard infant formula – intended for the long-term feeding of healthy infants.
  • Specialized (therapeutic) formula – used only when there is a specific medical indication, such as food allergies, intolerance to certain milk components, or digestive disorders.

All commercially manufactured infant formulas are produced according to international standards and are nutritionally comparable.

When preparing formula:

  • Always follow the preparation instructions on the product label exactly. Do not alter the recommended mixing ratio.
  • Prepare the formula fresh before each feeding.
  • Warm (or cool) the prepared formula to approximately body temperature before feeding.
  • Feed your baby using a clean feeding bottle or cup with an appropriate teat.
  • During bottle-feeding, make sure the teat remains completely filled with milk to reduce the amount of air your baby swallows.

Remember that babies who are not breastfed miss the close physical contact associated with breastfeeding and often benefit from additional affection and attention.

When bottle-feeding, hold your baby in the same position as you would during breastfeeding. This allows your baby to feel the warmth of your body, see your face more clearly, and strengthens bonding, providing comfort while supporting healthy emotional and developmental growth.
